Tips For Having Laser Hair Removal Performed On Your Legs

Posted on: 12 January 2021

If you are tired of having to choose between shaving and waxing your legs, you may be looking for another option. Shaving can be time-consuming — not to mention how hard it is to avoid nicking your skin. Waxing can be painful, and if you hire someone else to do it, the costs can add up. Laser hair removal can be a great alternative to shaving and waxing. The results are essentially permanent, although you may need a touch-up every few years, and the procedure only causes mild discomfort. However, there are a few tips you'll need to follow for a successful procedure.

Shave about two days beforehand.

For laser hair removal to be effective, the hairs themselves need to be very short. However, you don't want to shave right before your session since shaving leaves the skin sensitive and could increase your risk of irritation and soreness after laser hair removal. The right balance tends to be shaving two days before your laser hair removal appointment. Aim to be thorough; if you get out of the shower and realize you missed a few hairs, go back for them.

Avoid sun exposure before and after treatment.

UV light has a tendency to irritate your already-sensitive legs after treatment. Before treatment, even a mild sunburn could increase your risk of irritation and make the laser treatment a little less successful. So, for a week before laser hair removal and a weak after, keep your legs out of the sun. Wear long pants, apply sunscreen, or stay inside.

Don't apply lotions or creams.

It's a good idea to shower before heading in for your laser hair removal appointment. The less natural body oil there is on your legs, the better. What you do not want to do, however, is apply any lotions or creams to your legs. You may figure these will ease irritation from laser hair removal, but what they will actually do is make the laser less effective so you end up needing more appointments. Avoid soaps and washes with "built-in" moisturizers, too. Use a plain body wash or soap.

Relax.

When you are having laser hair removal performed, make sure you remain as relaxed as possible. Listen to soothing music, or play a game on your phone. When you get agitated, you tend to tense up the muscles in your legs, and this can sometimes make the laser less effective.

With the tips above, you can enjoy the benefits of laser hair removal and experience smooth, hairless legs without shaving or waxing.
